The Universe Has No Units: Why Dimensional Physics Constants Are All in Your Head

 J. Rogers, SE Ohio

In theoretical physics, there is a recurring obsession with "unifying" the fundamental forces. We spend billions of dollars and decades of mathematical effort trying to stitch gravity, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics together.

But what if the universe is already unified—trivially so—and the only thing that is fragmented is us?

There is a single physical scale to the universe. It has no units. It requires no names, because there is only one of them. The confusion arises because we insist on measuring this single, unified reality with a fragmented set of tools.

The Illusion of "Different" Dimensions

We tend to think of Mass, Length, Time, and Temperature as fundamental distinct pillars of physical reality. But they are not. They are simply distinct sensor input channels inherent to human biology.

  • We experience Time through memory and entropy.

  • We experience Length through vision and touch.

  • We experience Mass through proprioception (heaviness) and inertia.

Because our brains process these inputs via separate neurological channels, we invented separate scales to measure them: seconds, meters, kilograms. We built a map with three different legends for the same territory.

The fundamental constants of nature—

        cc
        GG
        hh
        kBk_B

—are not "magic numbers" woven into the fabric of the cosmos. They are conversion factors in our unit chart. They are the necessary mathematical patch-cables required to connect our mismatched sensory inputs.

Constants are Just Rotation Matrices

When we stare at the speed of light (

        cc

) or Newton’s gravitational constant (
        GG

), we aren't looking at the universe; we are looking at the distortion in our own heads.  We assume independent axis of measurement, but the math tells us they are dependent.

As you dive into the math, you realize that constants are not singular things. They are composite ratios—Planck Jacobians—constructed from our broken unit scales:

  • c=lP/tPc = l_P / t_P

  • h=mPlP2/tPh= m_P \cdot l_P^2 / t_P

  • G=lP3/(mPtP2)G = l_P^3 / (m_P \cdot t_P^2)

These equations expose the game. The constants are merely the ratios relative to each other against a single real physical scale in a unified universe. They act as transformation matrices to rotate our perception of "mass" or "time" back onto the single, true axis of the universe.  The name for this is Jacobins.

The One Physical Scale

When theoretical physicists use "Natural Units" (setting

        c=G=h=1c=G=h=1

), they often apologize for it. They call it a "mathematical convenience" or a "normalization trick."

It is neither. It is the only honest way to do physics.

Setting these values to 1 is not an arbitrary choice. It is the act of harmonizing the axis of measurement. It is the acknowledgment that there is only one natural scale where everything harmonizes.

When we define the Planck scale by redefining our measurement scales such that

        lP=mP=tP=1l_P = m_P = t_P = 1

, we are not saying that a meter is "equal" to a second. We are saying that the distinction between them was never real to begin with. We are aligning our abstract, mental charts with the actual physical scale of the universe.  The Planck units have si units becuase they only exist in the si unit chart, they scale our measurements against a single physical scale.  We are just harmonizing our axis of measurements all to that one real physical scale.

Unity is Trivial; Fragmentation is Artificial

The universe operates on self-interaction. It is simply geometry interacting with geometry, invariant to our unit scaling.

The only "real" numbers in physics are dimensionless ratios (like the Fine Structure Constant,

        α\alpha

).   The ratio v/c is also the same dimensionless ratio in every unit chart.  These ratios represent the universe comparing itself to itself. Everything else—every distinct unit, every dimensional constant—is a neurological artifact.

We don't need a Grand Unified Theory to glue the universe back together. The universe never broke, except in our own perceptions. We just need to stop viewing it through the fractured lens of our own sensors.

There is one scale. That is unity.
