The Biological Origin of Physical Constants: Why Survival Required the Illusion of Independent Dimensions

J. Rogers, SE Ohio

Abstract

Classical physics assumes that Mass, Length, Time, and Temperature are ontologically distinct dimensions. This assumption, codified in the SI unit system, necessitates the existence of "fundamental constants" (

G,c,h,kB
) to bridge the dimensional gaps. This paper argues that these gaps are not physical features of the universe, but cognitive artifacts of human evolution. We posit that the human sensory apparatus evolved to perceive the unified substrate of reality as fragmented "phase states" (Matter, Space, Heat) to optimize survival fitness. Consequently, the "fundamental constants" are identified not as laws of nature, but as the mathematical error codes generated when a biologically fragmented perception is mapped onto a unified geometric reality.

1. Introduction: The Anthropocentric Original Sin

In 1793, the French Academy established the Metric System. They defined the meter based on the Earth's quadrant, the second based on the Earth's rotation, and the kilogram based on the density of water. These choices were practical, human-centric, and metaphysically disastrous.

By defining these units independently, we implicitly encoded an assumption: that Mass, Length, and Time are independent variables. We assumed that you could change the mass of an object without affecting its geometry, or change its energy without affecting its mass.

However, the mathematical structure of modern physics—specifically the existence of dimensional constants—proves that this assumption is false. We are arguing that this error was not merely bureaucratic; it was biological. We systematically misperceived the unity of the universe because our senses were tuned for an environment where distinguishing "The Rock" (Mass) from "The Fire" (Heat) was a matter of life and death.

2. The Evolutionary Imperative: Fitness Beats Truth

Cognitive science suggests that sensory systems evolve to maximize fitness, not to depict objective truth. An organism that perceives the full quantum unity of the substrate—where a rock is simply a region of high-frequency condensed energy—would be computationally overwhelmed and likely eaten.

To survive, the human brain runs a "Data Compression Algorithm" that sorts the unified substrate into distinct, actionable categories:

  1. Mass (The Inert): We perceive high-frequency, localized standing waves as "Solid Matter." This allows us to manipulate tools and navigate obstacles. The brain tags this as "Conserved" and "Slow."

  2. Energy/Light (The Active): We perceive traveling waves as "Light" or "Heat." This allows us to identify energy sources and dangers. The brain tags this as "Flowing" and "Fast."

  3. Time (The Sequence): We perceive the geometric extension of the causal chain as "Flowing Time." This allows us to predict predation and causality.

These categories are the User Interface (UI) of the human organism. They are distinct icons on our desktop. However, physics has made the error of confusing the Icons with the Operating System.

3. The Mathematical Proof of Dependence

If Mass, Length, Time, and Temperature were truly independent dimensions (as our senses tell us), there would be no fixed ratios connecting them. You could have any amount of energy associated with any amount of mass.

But this is not the case. The math of the universe is rigid:

E=mc2

E=hf

E=kBT

These equations are proofs of Linear Dependence.

  • Equation (1) proves Mass is dependent on Energy (and thus Space/Time).

  • Equation (2) proves Energy is dependent on Frequency (Time).

  • Equation (3) proves Temperature is dependent on Energy.

The Transitive Proof:
If

mE
 and
Ef
 and
ET
, then:
mfT

Mathematically, there is only one independent variable (Action/Unity). The dimensions are linearly dependent. The fact that we need constants (

c2,h,kB
) to equate them proves that we are measuring the same thing using different rulers.

4. The Constants as Biological Error Codes

If the universe is unified (

mfT
), why do we have constants like
h1034
 and
c21016
?

These magnitudes are the measure of the Biological Scale Factor.

  • Why is

    c
     so big?

Because we are distinct biological entities evolved for low-velocity survival. We perceive "Space" (Meters) and "Time" (Seconds) as vastly different because our neural processing speed (
    100
ms) is geologic compared to the speed of light.
    c
is the ratio between our slow perception and the universe's speed.

  • Why is

    h
     so small?

Because we are macroscopic entities. To feel "solid," we must consist of
    1027
atoms. We are insensitive to individual quanta.
    h
is the ratio between our "Pixel Size" (Joules) and the universe's pixel size (Planck).

  • Why is

    kB
     necessary?

Because our skin sensors distinguish "Hot" from "Heavy." We evolved separate sensory channels for mechanical impact (Force) and thermal transfer (Heat).
    kB
is the mathematical patch required to bridge these two incompatible sensory data streams.

The constants are not fundamental properties of nature. They are the Jacobian Transformation Matrices required to map the unified geometry of the universe onto the fragmented "Caveman UI" of the human brain.

5. Conclusion: Overcoming the Adaptive Lie

The fragmentation of physics is a byproduct of the fragmentation of perception. We were forced by evolution to assume that the axis of Mass was independent of the axis of Time, because treating them as the same thing would have resulted in extinction.

However, the task of Physics is to transcend the biological interface. When we rigorously analyze the math, the constants reveal the truth: the axes are dependent. The universe is a single, unified process of geometric self-interaction.

  • Biology tells us the elephant is a Trunk, a Ear, and a Leg (Mass, Time, Heat).

  • Math tells us the Trunk is connected to the Ear.

  • Physics is the realization that it is one Elephant.

The constants are simply the seams where we stitched our disparate sensory maps together. To understand the universe, we must stop studying the stitches and start studying the cloth.
